Playing with Google Earth today I ws looking at Dartford with the Google Earth community filer on. At Joydens Wood, someone has placed a marker that reads:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joydens Wood has a fantastic Saxon history and I am looking for others to help me piece it together. Please contact me if you would like to help. clive@identitysolutions.uk.com
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How about that? Maypoleman should contact this chap and paste a similar link on Google Earth.

Greetings.

I haven't used community filters on Google Earth so don't know if this is the same thing I am going to comment on.

I lived in Tile Kiln Lane from aged 8 - 15, so Joydens wood was my back garden almost. The dean holes were known to us kids, with many collapsed ones within the woods.

One that was not collapsed was at the above mentioned coordinates .. very close to the electricity substation on the path next to the small building identified or on the path running parallel. Within the small copse for sure, and at that time - 30 years ago, fenced off and covered with a locked grate ... we had grand plans to break in, get a long rope and go exploring ... never did of course !

We did manage to go down one in c1964. It was close to the path which ran from Ferndell Ave (Near bakers Dump) towards Bexley and near the rear of some kennels in Tile Kiln Lane. We tied some ropes together and discovered the chambers underneath. We kept on buying candles from the hardware shop in Summerhouse Drive and he rumbled us. The next day it was fenced off and later sealed. Fantastic adventure. Would die if my kids ever did anything so stupid ! Maypoleman. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

I used to go to Joydens Wood in the mid to late fifties. Then there were several dene holes which actually had ropes permanently attached. Friends of mine had descended some of them & it was claimed that one was 90ft deep. Another was said to be 20ft & so was probably blocked. In retrospect, since they were unfenced & there were no warning signs, it is surprising nobody fell down them. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?
