Fire Engines
Jul 11 2008, 3:45 AM EDT | Post edited: Jul 11 2008, 3:45 AM EDT
I remember very well these fire engines, they uused to turn up at heath fires & we as young boys would race off to get to the fire & help, sometimes the firemen would supply us with canvas beaters to put out fires in the grass & that would leave them free to concentrate on the bigger stuff, occasionally we would be told to get lost, or words to that effect, but not often, mostly they appreciated our help. I have a picture of a heath fire painted by George Stockford Snr. that he gave my wife & I before we left the U.K. but it does not show a fire engine but does show the hospital tower. It is hanging in our bedroom & I often look at it & think of the good old days. Sounding like an old man now. Steve Parker 6  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

As well as the fire engines do you remember that most singular smell of the smoke mixed with the sound of the crackling and then the final steam coming from the drenched flames. I can always remember, with amazement, how well the heath seemed to recover every year and how fresh ferns would sprout from blackened earth the following spring - or later in the summer if it was an early one. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. I was walking over the Heath one Sunday afternoon with our dog, Terry, a wire-haired terrier rescued from the bombings in Bermondsey. We could wander at will, in those days, with no fear. Suddenly, I came upon two fire-engines and loads of firemen putting out a fire over in the birch forest between the 'middle road' and the Hospital side, up towards Leyton Cross. I had been in my own little world and hadn't a clue that anything was wrong until I was right at the fire! Of course, in those days, we only had bells and not these awful klaxons that drive us mad today. I remember the smell of the burned gorse and shrubs after a fire. Horrible.
