I've just joined the website today so my reply to the donkey mystery is a little delayed. My elder sister tells me that the donkeys were owned by "Donkey" Smith. A gentleman who lived in the end house on the east side of Beaconsfield Road. The pictures were probably taken before the start of the war. I don't remember the donkeys but do remember Mr Smith living there.

Hi, Your recollections appear to be correct and I believe the intials WS still exist on the front of the house at the apex. This house stood on it's own until the final phase of the estate was built c 1935. Look forward to some interesting recollections appearing on the site !

Sorry, Nancy Beck and Susan Smith! Didn't mean to leave you out of my list. I hadn't met Susan before that day but having done so, she contacted Paul Underwood who attended Maypole School and became an artist, a contemporary and friend of Sir Peter Blake (also an old Maypolean) but is now very ill. Susan remembered Paul but he was a year older than me so I have only known him via emails since 2002. Apologies for any other omissions!

We had a fabulous time. Sadly, as all the chums on show here were a few years older than myself and I never managed to play with them on the estate. The older boys were too busy chasing the girls and the older girls wouldn't look at boys my age ! I had one peer who attended; Phillip Reed. He joined the Maypole School at the same time as myself (51 years ago). His face is indistinguishable in one of the shots. So - if any of the attendees would like to let us know which face you are wearing - or the names of others then please let us know and put us all out of our misery !!

Does anyone know the history of the mock Tudor house that is in Spurrell Ave, Joydens Wood near the junction with Chalet Close. As a teenager I lived next door from 1959 to 1967 but never asked anyone about it. The house may not be that old but it was already there when our house was built as part of the Joydens Wood Estate.

Thanks maypoleman , my interest in the history of Joydens wood mainly stems from the fact i work with alot of the elderly residents in JW and here all sorts of interesting stories particularly from the days of the self build groups when they allegedly uncovered quite a few bits and pieces from the roman era and i was talking to a gentleman yesterday who discovered in the late 60's that his garage was actually built on a dene hole . I was also told that sections of roman mosaics were uncovered during the building but for fear of work ceasing only as few people knew about them one was in hillbrow or stevens close and the other in Brackendene . Not sure where i read this but i think one of the old OS maps has the area behind the old summerhouse drive doctors listed as Roman cemetery.!

From about 1956 to 1963 I lived at 4 Dartford Road, almost opposite Baldwyns Park. (I want to call it Baldwyns Park Road, but Google maps says otherwise). There were three or four shops opposite - are these the ones in the photos called 'the dip'. The wall looks like the one that I walked by every day up to the Maypole school.
The main shop that I recall was 'Mr Hendersons' shop. I believe that it was a general purpose newsagents. My main memory is that every November Mr. Henderson would take coupons for anything in exchange for fireworks for kids. I believe that there was also a co-op, where would tell our 'divi' number every time that we shopped.

The Henderson's shop was first, then the Coop - the first shop was the butchers, next door th Coop grocers. Then Mr Sweets the haberdasher with the hair salon behind the shop at first and then thy had the salon upstirs. The Kelseys ran the fish shop. We moved to Ferndale Avenue in 1950 and stayed around the area until 1974.

Hi all, i have been carefully looking at the photo on the homepage of this website with the title "Looking towards Hospital Gates c1910. Denton Terrace visible but school not yet built" if you carefully look at the photo you can see a white mound infront of where the school was built and just to the left of the first houses in the photo. My question is : is this and ancient barrow/tumulus???? it certainly looks like one!
Maypole man you have an old map on the site and just at the point where this alleged Barrow/tumulus is sited there is some of your copyright logos obsucuring from view what could be the marking of an old barrow. Could we look at this map again and see if infact this was a Barrow/Tumulus is marked . It would be very exciting if it was.
I invite any information on bronze age or neolitic activity or remains in this area. Any ideas or answers anyone. Am i seeing things?? look very carefully and you will see a white mound exactly the size and proportions of an ancient bronze age Barrow. I am a reasearcher into these ancient sites and it looks like it is from the photo. Can we confirm it?
best wishes

I have also heard stories of an ancient stone (megalith) sited at the Leyton Cross roundabout. This would make sense as ancient sites could often be found along ancient tracks and in straight lines. This info comes from an ex Police officer that new the area very well. Has anyone seen any Sarsen stones or big stone anywhere.? they do exist in Kent at Coldrum, kits koty, Addington and various other sites. However with the necesssity of new building products they were often plundered. Any stoens in maypole anyone??

A question: where does the stream thats appears under Baldwyns park shops runs past the allotments, through the horses field under the stile bridge and then into a tunnel that goes under the A2 into a big pond start? Where is the spring? Does anybody know? has anybody seen the spring? Also where did it used to flow too? i assume it went to the cray and then way pooled in that horrible pond next to the A2 opposite the dump/lorry place/old A2.?
What is the history from start to finish of this enigmatic stream. I remeber after heavy rain playing pooh stiks at the horse's field stile.

You are right about the direction and flow line. The stream runs from the Joydens Wood area. I can remember that in summer it was dry and when it rained it was flowing. This makes me believe that it is a natural 'soak away' or 'run off' from the topsoil of the upper area of Baldwyns Park / Tile Kiln Lane when sodden. The line of the stream follows a natural valley formed between Maypole and Coldblow. I am not discounting the theory of a spring, though, and would welcome any other comments from yourself / other readers on this subject. Regards. Maypoleman.

If you look on Wikipedia it will tell you that medicine balls are used in sports medicine for rehabilitation & strength training & that similar objects were used by the Persians 3000 years ago. Modern athletes use them for strengthening & conditioning.

This was used by kids of my era, 1940s / 50s. The tree was next to a three strand barbed wire fence that marked the boundary of Heathwood Lodge, I remember once when two of the boys (then) Derek Bottomly & I think Micky Hogan were swinging on it together & the rope broke, they landed on the fence & broke it, but niether of them were hurt, how I'll never know. But we had another rope up in quick time. Nothing to do with me I might add, I was a bit of a wimp when it came to climbing tall trees. Steve.

Ah, the innocence of our youth ! Our gang felt the same, some 50 years ago ! The 'Camp Hole' we thought we named - until I interviewed a lady who had played there c 1915. She called it the 'Camp Hole' as well in those days. The wonderful thing about all this research is how my eyes have been opened to all the layers beneath my layer - and the ones following. We would be so pleased if you could add something from your years on the estate to the site. I am sure a lot of older readers would be quite fascinated to see what your lot did with our 'world'.

My computer went down before I finished sending these pictures taken by my father who lived in North Cray Road. They were taken on his Vest Pocket Kodak when it must have been nearly new. I still have it and it is probably still in working order, but this size film is long gone so it's just an heirloom.

I would like to be able to communicate with Yvonne Kerrisk. Until now I have been able to log onto website but hooray here we are. I do find that I enjoy reading the Maypole site but unfortunately do not always have a lot of time. On the page about drama productions and list of people involved is it possible to make both my parent's surname "LL" not Gemmel, please. Unfortunately my Father passed away in 1990 and my Mother in 2002. I am sure they would have been very interested in this site especially reference to Baldwyns Park and the Pavilion. I am interested in the possible Spring renunion one afternoon walking around the "old" stomping ground and meeting up with lost friends.

In the last 3 photos of this set can be seen what I believe is the boundary marker between Bexley & Dartford. 3rd. from last it shows as a rusty old epitaph on the right of photo, 2nd. last it looks a lot smarter painted white, & the last photo part of said object can be seen in silhouettebetween fence & lamp post. regards Steve Parker.

I learned ballroom dancimg at Baldwyns Park Pavilion in the 40s with perhaps a generally rather older group. The teacher whose name now escapes me suggested i might move on to a higher level and I went to a class in Sidcup, where I met many good friends and acquired a medal or two. i was really sad when my parents announced we were moving to Watfors and though I joined another class there, it just wasn't the same. Never again did I have a regular partner - I swear all my boyfriends and certainly my husband appeared to have three legs where dancing was concerned, so I took up cycling instead - but I still miss being able to dance properly.

Hi, Does anybody else remember 2 very old trees that stood just at the entrance, as you went in to Bexley Hospital. According to my mother who worked as a secratary at the hospital, these trees are mentioned in the Doomsday book. I have since been back to the hospital, after its development to looked for these trees, i was interested in there fate.
As a child we would play in the hospital grounds and i remember seeing patients standing next to theses massive and ancient trees smoking ciggies. i would just ride past on my bike on the way to Joydons Wood. I think they are sweet chestuts.
When entering the hopital after the development, i was at first disorinetated as the new entrance is different, however i kept exploring the new estate and found that the two trees had been left and included in a lawn out the front of some new house. Go in the Hospital and go left if you want to see them.
i went over to them, remembering these old trees are included in the Doomsday book. A very angry resident game out shouting" get off my land" i just laughed in the knowledge of what history these trees have and the angry resident seemed completely oblivious to the fact that this is where mental pateints would hang out.
This trees should have a plaque next to them, they are a very important part of the history of the Mapole estate. Can anyone post a photo, i wish i had one to share with you. ill get one next time i go back.

Hi i found pics of it http://www.bexleyhospital.co.uk/pictures/doomsdaytree.jpg
but more would be good. especially some of how they are today.
These trees should be protected and local schools should vist them, a very important part of the history of Bexley.
