Dear Margaret, I remember you being born. I was Sheila Houlton and lived on the corner of Baldwyns Road. Mum and Dad had the cafe on the Heath. Your brother Peter was maybe a year older than me. We left the Maypole when I was 10 yrs and 11 days. I remember going into every room in that house and crying, on the day we left! Regarding that field, I remember Mum meeting me from school one day and we walked into Bexley. On the way, there was a snake lying on the pathway just past the gate where the Chapel was situated. Do you remember, the grey fencing had broken in several places at the bottom? Well, my dear Mum picked up the snake and put it back through a large hole. She said it was dead but a child might run into the road in fright if she had left it there. We were about an hour in Bexley and then walked home again. On the way, I looked through the hole, - then into the next hole, then climbed on the gate and went into the field. THERE WAS NO SNAKE! The darned thing must have been alive still, and crawled away! I don't know how she did it but Mum wasn't afraid of anything and I can still see her picking up the largest spider in her little hand, to put it out of the house. Your mention of the field brought all this back to me; thank you. Strangely enough, I never ever saw a snake on the Heath, although we roamed all over it as kids. Do you also remember having Sports Day in that little field? We previously used to hold it on the wide verge at the side of Bexley Hospital. By the way, your aunt lived a few doors from my Mum in Stone, until she moved to Temple Hill at the age of 90. I believe her name was Ivy Hampshier? I remember that you and Peter had a cousin, David Evans, who lived over Crayford way. Would you be old enough to remember Mrs. Parker (Jean and John's Mum) being stabbed on her way home past the hospital, with the twins in the pram? She survived! You are obviously enjoying this site, as I am. Best regards, Sheila
