The large trees on right of picture were much bigger when we were kids & was a kind of partition between Dell Rd. & the path to down to the dell itself & also the dirt road that went out to the big house & cottage. The first of these trees was known to us as the aeroplane tree & quite easy to climb, not that I climbed very high as I had then, & still do, have an aversion to hights. The A2 was further toward the camera. Further off picture left was what we called camp hole No.2

I remember the camp well , we used to go & pester the soldiers for food, occasionally we were successful. The main gate was on the left at Leyton cross. It was the home of a Royal Artillery Anti- Aircraft Regt. I don't know which one as they didn;t display that info. at the time. There was always a lot of shrapnel around after a raid.

I've just joined the website today so my reply to the donkey mystery is a little delayed.
My elder sister tells me that the donkeys were owned by "Donkey" Smith. A gentleman who lived in the end house on the east side of Beaconsfield Road. The pictures were probably taken before the start of the war. I don't remember the donkeys but do remember Mr Smith living there. MaypoleChippy

Looks like you all had a great time, wish I could have been with you. Some names of those on the photos would be handy as I haven't seen most of you for something close to 60 yrs. Make you think won.t it!! Stay well all of you until the next meeting. Regards Steve Parker.

Does anyone know the history of the mock Tudor house that is in Spurrell Ave, Joydens Wood near the junction with Chalet Close. As a teenager I lived next door from 1959 to 1967 but never asked anyone about it. The house may not be that old but it was already there when our house was built as part of the Joydens Wood Estate.

From about 1956 to 1963 I lived at 4 Dartford Road, almost opposite Baldwyns Park. (I want to call it Baldwyns Park Road, but Google maps says otherwise). There were three or four shops opposite - are these the ones in the photos called 'the dip'. The wall looks like the one that I walked by every day up to the Maypole school.
The main shop that I recall was 'Mr Hendersons' shop. I believe that it was a general purpose newsagents. My main memory is that every November Mr. Henderson would take coupons for anything in exchange for fireworks for kids. I believe that there was also a co-op, where would tell our 'divi' number every time that we shopped.

Hi all, i have been carefully looking at the photo on the homepage of this website with the title "Looking towards Hospital Gates c1910. Denton Terrace visible but school not yet built" if you carefully look at the photo you can see a white mound infront of where the school was built and just to the left of the first houses in the photo. My question is : is this and ancient barrow/tumulus???? it certainly looks like one!
Maypole man you have an old map on the site and just at the point where this alleged Barrow/tumulus is sited there is some of your copyright logos obsucuring from view what could be the marking of an old barrow. Could we look at this map again and see if infact this was a Barrow/Tumulus is marked . It would be very exciting if it was. I invite any information on bronze age or neolitic activity or remains in this area. Any ideas or answers anyone. Am i seeing things?? look very carefully and you will see a white mound exactly the size and proportions of an ancient bronze age Barrow. I am a reasearcher into these ancient sites and it looks like it is from the photo. Can we confirm it? best wishes

A question: where does the stream thats appears under Baldwyns park shops runs past the allotments, through the horses field under the stile bridge and then into a tunnel that goes under the A2 into a big pond start? Where is the spring? Does anybody know? has anybody seen the spring? Also where did it used to flow too? i assume it went to the cray and then way pooled in that horrible pond next to the A2 opposite the dump/lorry place/old A2.?
What is the history from start to finish of this enigmatic stream. I remeber after heavy rain playing pooh stiks at the horse's field stile.

If you look on Wikipedia it will tell you that medicine balls are used in sports medicine for rehabilitation & strength training & that similar objects were used by the Persians 3000 years ago. Modern athletes use them for strengthening & conditioning.

This was used by kids of my era, 1940s / 50s. The tree was next to a three strand barbed wire fence that marked the boundary of Heathwood Lodge, I remember once when two of the boys (then) Derek Bottomly & I think Micky Hogan were swinging on it together & the rope broke, they landed on the fence & broke it, but niether of them were hurt, how I'll never know. But we had another rope up in quick time. Nothing to do with me I might add, I was a bit of a wimp when it came to climbing tall trees. Steve.

My computer went down before I finished sending these pictures taken by my father who lived in North Cray Road. They were taken on his Vest Pocket Kodak when it must have been nearly new. I still have it and it is probably still in working order, but this size film is long gone so it's just an heirloom.

I would like to be able to communicate with Yvonne Kerrisk. Until now I have been able to log onto website but hooray here we are. I do find that I enjoy reading the Maypole site but unfortunately do not always have a lot of time. On the page about drama productions and list of people involved is it possible to make both my parent's surname "LL" not Gemmel, please. Unfortunately my Father passed away in 1990 and my Mother in 2002. I am sure they would have been very interested in this site especially reference to Baldwyns Park and the Pavilion. I am interested in the possible Spring renunion one afternoon walking around the "old" stomping ground and meeting up with lost friends.

In the last 3 photos of this set can be seen what I believe is the boundary marker between Bexley & Dartford. 3rd. from last it shows as a rusty old epitaph on the right of photo, 2nd. last it looks a lot smarter painted white, & the last photo part of said object can be seen in silhouettebetween fence & lamp post. regards Steve Parker.
